Roads in Africa

The car was speeding along one of the nation’s so-called express ways, riddled with potholes some as huge as craters. Other road users were also putting their derring-do skills to practice on the double three-lane way since there was little police presence. Where law enforcement agents were available, they were much more interested in how much they can wangle out of the driver than in the pursuit of their lawful duty of patrolling the highways and keeping suicidal wayfarers at bay. In fact, on this autobahn, the traveler could consider himself free to transform the road into any kind of theatre that took his fancy; provided he had enough in his pocket and was willing to part with the appropriate sum, he would get away with murder, literally and metaphorically. The sole occupant of the car, a new comer to the country had been assured that the driver was one of the oldest tested and trusted men behind the wheels of the company’s vehicles. So, he had made a conscious effort to relax.
Notwithstanding, he couldn’t take anything for granted because the reputation of these particular road-users had preceded them to reach him in his country of birth and what he was witnessing on the road at the moment has not done anything to allay his fears. So using all his skills on staying calm from Fitness Singles classes, he kept his eyes on the road, warily looking around for signs of imminent danger. Suddenly, he noticed that the driver side door of the car right in front seemed to be opening. He thought it was coming undone because the driver had not shut it properly and prayed that he’ll have the presence of mind to notice and correct. Instead, the door opened wider and the driver’s head popped out. Without pausing in his driving, he bent low, looked under the vehicle, raised his head back up, closed the door and continued as if there was nothing to it. He also noticed that his own driver just continued driving as if the scene unfolding before him was nothing if not normal. He was speechless for a long time but when he couldn’t bear it any longer, he asked the driver what it was all about. “He was just checking his wheels sir”.
