Overfishing Concerns in Africa

African countries are finally on the way of improving significantly in terms of economics. They are facing increased international demand for their resources and services as well as participation in larger investment opportunities. From being a newly developing white diesel suppliers to becoming a powerful mining industry, African economies are aiming high. However, sharing the benefits of such extended economic power is not quite helpful to people that have spent most of their lives on the sandy and low-populated beaches of the African coast.

Environmental News Networks reports that Africa is struggling to fight overfishing - many people are starving because of the lack of food, especially around the Southern and Eastern coasts of the continent. Some families have been living on fish for their whole lives and the reduced population of sea species might be a quite serious problem for the African economies to cope with.

The reason why fish is very scarce recently is not because of an unknown event that have been skipped to be noticed by authorities such as pollution or unlawful fishing activity. The reason is that while Western economies allow themselves modern technology in fishing industry (thus being able to go fishing in open sea), African fishing is restricted to small coastal areas and fishermen from the continent cannot really enter open sea. Majority of people are using small boats to conduct their daily activities in the sea.

This leads to a significant problem. The population of fish near the coasts of Africa has reduced in times for just one year - fish is either being caught more often than it is necessary for natural balance to be restore or it is being pushed back into the open sea by the efforts of sailors to get a more solid catch. Fishermen complain that there is hardly fish left in the coastal areas and this is causing significant problems for people in poorly urbanized territories and coastal areas.
