South Africa Sports Journey Of 1994 to the World Cup
For the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee (OC), the FIFA World Cup must be more than a success, hosting the event must have long-term legacy benefits for South Africa, and in fact Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will only truly be a success if the youth of South Africa benefit. Even if the Bafana Bafana, the national football team in South Africa, failed in the conquest of one of the world’s prestigious trophies, the immediate and considerable profits will be the infrastructure, economic and social legacy. Another benefit will be the remembrance of the FIFA World Cup, the most famous sporting tournament on Hearth, which took place in South Africa. But the country, in becoming a democratic nation in 1994, has already a history in sports and the youth must remember or know it.

In fact, the winds of change blew through South African sport in 1994 following the first democratic election in April. The minister of Sport and Recreation unveiled an ambitious five-year plan aimed at redressing imbalances in sports. Included in the five-year plan are a sports development trust to which members of the private sector pledged at least R1 million each; the establishment of a national football pools lottery; a national sport and leisure academy to be built between Johannesburg and Pretoria; development programs to encompass all levels of sport; multipurpose facilities in the largely rural areas; a national sports information center, and scientific support services. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized the National Olympic Committee of South Africa (NOCSA) as the country’s sole controlling body for Olympic sport in 1994. The National Sports Congress (NSC), which represents non-Olympic sports, has now firmly established itself as the country’s major umbrella sports organization. To promote better liaison between the Government and the sports fraternity, a National Sports Forum was established. The Department of Sport and Recreation, the NSC and NOCSA are equally represented in this forum. After an absence of 36 years, South Africa was welcomed back to the Commonwealth Games held in Victoria (Canada). The last time a South African team participated in these games was in Cardiff in 1958. In 2004, the Games were held in South Africa.
The Reconstruction and Development Program states that all sport and recreation should cut across all development programs, and be accessible and affordable to all South African. The program aims to facilitate the mobilization of resources in both the public and private sectors to redress inequality in society. Particular attention will be paid to the provision of facilities at schools and in communities where there are large concentrations of unemployed youth.
